Premise Wiring is the Longest-Lasting Investment in your Network Infrastructure

Premise wiring is easily the longest-lasting investment you'll make for your infrastructure. Switches, routers and hubs have an average life expectancy of five years, but building wiring lasts 15 to 20 years.
On December 13, 1999, the Category 5E specification (TIA/EIA-568A-5) was officially ratified as standard. RGD King Ltd uses Category 5E in all its installations and believe that it is critical that you use certified Category 5E equipment from end to end. All our installations come complete with Handover Documentation which include the cabling test results to TIA/EIA-568A-5 specification.


Do You Need To Upgrade?

Before you run out and order a whole new Category 5E cabling system, assess whether Category 5E should be in your future. If you are running a building LAN without at least Category 5 wiring you cannot run a 100-Mbps network. You therefore have two choices, either stay below 100Mbps or upgrade.


What makes one Category 5E installation better than another?


Some of it is in the cabling, but a large part depends on the installation and cross-connect equipment. All RGD King Ltd employees have extensive training in Category 5E installations and terminations. On completion of an installation all outlets are stringently tested to meet and exceed the required standards.

What's Next?
Category 6?The proposed Category 6 cabling is specified as the last of the RJ-45 style cables for LAN wiring, with the standard specifying a maximum frequency of 250 MHz. However the parameters for this cabling structure are not even in the draft stage yet - they are merely proposed and likely to change. A Category 6 standard is not likely to emerge until 2002.




Fibre To The Desk?The two biggest advantages of fibre to the desk are higher bandwidth and EMI (electromagnetic interference) immunity. However, it's doubtful that your enterprise will need up to 9 Gbps to the desktop within the next 20 years.
